What is Teeth Straightening (Orthodontics)?
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specialises in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. These irregularities are otherwise known as malocclusions. Our experienced and qualified team provide teeth straightening treatments for adults and children alike, and will guide you through every step of the process. The practise of orthodontics utilises proper design, application and control of appliances. To help bring teeth into proper alignment, we provide two types of orthodontic treatments at Blackburn Family Dental Care, such as fixed braces and removable braces.
When should you consider Teeth Straightening?
The primary reason for teeth straightening treatment is to smile with confidence. However, there are also many other reasons and benefits to have orthodontic treatment such as:
- Healthier gums
- Improved mouth and jaw functionality
- Easier to maintain proper dental hygiene
- Decreased risk of cavities and tooth injury
- Boosted self-confidence and appearance

What are fixed braces?
Braces is a type of fixed orthodontic appliance that allows movement designed to straighten teeth. It consists of specialised brackets that are fixed onto each of your teeth – a light, high technology shape-memory wire engages each bracket causing the teeth to move to a straightened position. Fixed braces can move teeth precisely and may be suitable for correcting more complex orthodontic problems. Here at Blackburn Family Dental Care, we use the Damon Q system which is a state of the art modern fixed braces system.
What are removable braces?
Another type of orthodontic appliance at Blackburn Family Dental Care, is removable braces consisting of clear plastic aligners, otherwise known as ‘clear aligners’. We utilise two main systems in clear aligners are namely Invisalign, and ClearCorrect. They are very good for correcting a wide range of malocclusions or orthodontic problems. Removable braces offer amazing benefits, such as in some cases a shorter treatment time compared to traditional braces.
How do clear aligners work?
Clear aligners, or invisible braces, are teeth straightening treatments that use bespoke clear plastic aligners to gently move teeth into predetermined positions. These aligners fit snugly onto your teeth, and must be worn for majority of the day for them to be effective. In order for the treatment to work, you should only take them out to eat, or when you’re flossing or brushing your teeth. Each aligner is usually worn 1 – 2 weeks, depending on the system of clear aligners used. Since the aligners are transparent and made of clear plastic, it is hardly noticeable. If your teeth are only mildly crooked, aligners may only need to be worn for 6 months, or in more severe crooked teeth, 1 – 2 years.
What are the advantages of choosing clear aligners (Invisalign and ClearCorrect)?
These clear aligners offer a virtually invisible way to improve your smile without the need of fixed braces. Not only are clear aligners more aesthetically pleasing than conventional braces, which consists of metal brackets and wires, their material is also smooth and slightly flexible, making them more comfortable and easier to adapt to. Because they are removable, your teeth as well as the aligners, can be easily cleaned. In conventional braces, because of the fixed nature of the appliances on your teeth, cleaning underneath the wires and brackets can be difficult.
Clear aligners are almost invisible, which is a plus point for adults who may feel embarrassed to let others know they are straightening their teeth. Wearing clear aligners will ensure that you will be able to resume your day-to-day activities with little to no disturbance, and more importantly, while allowing you to retain a great smile.
How is treatment planned?
Firstly, we will assess your suitability with the appropriate photographs, radiographs and impressions. After thorough examination of your teeth and facial profile, Cad/Cam technology is utilised to create a virtual model of your mouth. From there, a treatment plan will be developed specifically for you, based on this virtual model, to custom-mould a series of clear, removable aligners that will help you achieve your desired straightened teeth. You will be able to visualise the movement each aligner will give in a computer animation before your treatment begins.
What is the treatment duration?
Generally, you would be required to wear each set of aligners day and night, only removing them when necessary, such as during meal time, brushing or flossing your teeth. As time goes by, your teeth will move little by little to your new smile. By using invisible braces, as your teeth straightening treatment, the total duration will last for about 6 months to a year, with more complex cases taking about 2 years. During this period, our dentist will review the progress regularly, and will advise you every step of the way.
Are clear aligners suitable for my situation?
If you had previous orthodontic treatment and teeth have relapsed or returned to their original position, clear aligners may be a quick alternative to straighten things again without going through fixed braces again.
If you are an adult and would like to improve the appearance of your smile through straighter teeth but do not wish to have the full fixed braces, then clear aligners may be the treatment alternative for you.
Will I need to wear a retainer after treatment?
Teeth always have a memory, almost in all cases retention is required. Depending on the amount of correction done, different retentive appliances is required. These can be removable and worn for a certain number of hours a day, or it can also be permanently bonded onto the back surfaces of the teeth so it is not visible.
