SLEEP APNOEAWhat is sleep apnoea?
Sleep apnoea occurs is where there is an obstruction of the upper airways during sleep. The obstruction can be from various sources but may also be from dental related structures such as the tongue, or the tonsils. These obstructions can cause pauses of breath which can occur many times during the night while sleeping. As a result, it may cause daytime sleepiness and lack of concentration. It has also been linked to increase risks of heart disease, heart attacks and strokes.
How is it diagnosed?
During your routine 6 monthly checks, our dentists will have a discussion with you if they suspect you have a possibility of obstructive sleep apnoea. A true diagnosis however needs to be done by a sleep physician utilising investigations such as a sleep study. Sleep studies are typically referred by your local medical doctor.
How does it relate to dentistry?
If you have a diagnosis of mild to moderate sleep apnoea and it has been determined by a sleep physician that the blockage is dental related, we can make you a customised oral device to wear at night. This is otherwise known as a MAS (mandibular advancement splint). The device works by moving your jaw and surrounding oral tissues forwards, to increase the airflow. Of course a proper diagnosis by a sleep physician is necessary.
In more severe cases, the CPAP mask is and has been to this date the gold standard of treatment.
