WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt in early adulthood. They are the most variable of teeth. It is not uncommon for them to erupt in different directions and come in different shapes and sizes. What is most concerning is if they do not have adequate space for eruption, potentially damaging or risking damage to adjacent teeth and surrounding tissues. Since they are right at the back of your mouth, they are typically difficult to clean. Sometimes plaque and bacteria can get between the wisdom teeth and surrounding gum tissues and teeth, this can cause immense pain and swelling. If this happens often, it may be a sign that your wisdom teeth are not in a favourable position and may need to be removed.

How can I tell if my wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Our dentist will keep a close eye of the position and angulation of your wisdom teeth through your 6 monthly checks. Digital X-rays may be utilised or requested to assess in more detail the risks of leaving your wisdom teeth there. Based on a sound examination and the appropriate investigations, our dentists will be able to make a recommendation on whether your wisdom teeth will cause you more problems in the future, and the need to remove them.

What is the procedure for wisdom teeth removal?

Wisdom teeth removal is in most cases quite straightforward and can be carried out in our dental surgery under local anaesthesia. If our dentists deem your case to be complicated, then we may refer you to an oral maxillofacial surgeon to have it removed.
