What Are Dental Implants?

With decades of favourable results, dental implants have proven to be a safe and effective way of replacing teeth. Made from materials compatible with the human body, dental implants ensure a strong and safe foundation for replacement teeth.

The process of getting dental implants in Vermont South consists of two phases. In the first phase, an implant fixture is placed into the patient’s bone. The fixture is often screw shaped or sometimes cylindrical shaped depending on the brand and type. Once in the patient’s bone, time is needed for it to fully integrate and for the titanium to have a union with the patient’s bone. The second phase is the fitting of the prosthesis (or the portion that is above the gum and used to chew with). This procedure requires a few steps to ensure that it closely mimics the nature and the shape of your pre-existing teeth.

Why You Should Get Dental Implants

A relatively safe treatment option other than removable dentures or dental bridges, a dental implant can be a life-changing experience for many people. As dental implants can replace individual lost teeth or help rebuild a whole smile, they can significantly improve a patient’s quality of life.

For those who have lost teeth due to gum disease, tooth decay, or trauma, we are happy to speak to you about your options when it comes to dental implants at Vermont South. Dental implants can be considered in spaces that have been left for long time (ie when the tooth had been extracted a while ago) whilst improving how you eat and speak. Forces directed from chewing directly to the jawbone help prevent the jawbone from shrinking, and keep existing teeth firmly in place by preventing movement into spaces. We are committed to providing dental implants that allow patients to regain full function of their teeth and smile confidently.

Dental Implant Treatment In Vermont South

At Blackburn Family Dental Care, the treatment will begin with assessing the patient’s teeth, oral health, and jawbone density. This is done with a specialised X-ray called a CBCT (Cone Beam X-ray). In most cases there will be sufficient bone, but the dentist will need to assess whether additional procedures are required during the implant placement. If there is insufficient bone volume for the ideal implant in the site, a grafting procedure may be required to place the new implants successfully. Our dentists will advise on your options for dental implants in Vermont South.

During the procedure itself, a dental implant fixture made of titanium shaped like a rod/cone or screw is then inserted into the jawbone. Patients are anesthetised using local anaesthetic, and the entire process typically takes less than an hour. The “fixture” is then “submerged” in bone beneath the gum. A healing process known as “osseointegration” occurs in the following months, where the implant fixture fuses with the bone.

In most cases, the implant would be settled in and fully healed within 3 to 6 months – however, this also depends on your medical and dental history as well as other health-related factors. Dental implant dentists would then be able to carry forward with the process of fitting the replacement teeth to the firmly positioned implant fixtures in bone.

On top of this, guided implant surgery is also offered as part of our services at Blackburn Family Dental Care. In guided implant surgery, we use the latest technology to perform a bone scan and an optical impression of your mouth. These two scans are combined and we are able to plan the most optimal position of the implant for that given site. A surgical guide is 3D milled and created to direct the placement of the implant in the most ideal position for each individual patient. A surgical guide is basically similar to a secure mouthguard which is placed and secured temporarily onto your existing teeth or gums during the surgical placement of the fixture. This mouthguard “guides” precision drills and the implant itself to the most ideal position, hence eliminating or reducing surgical errors. Ask our dentists to learn more about this option.

Dental Implants: Are They Right For You?

Before starting any procedure, our dentists carefully screen every patient to evaluate whether they are suitable candidates for the treatment. Healthy patients usually qualify for dental implants. However, we need to rule out any medical factors that may pose a risk or cause complications during a dental implant.

At Blackburn Family Dental Care, you can expect the highest quality implants alongside the latest and safest technology. We work very closely with our dental implants dentists to craft and create implant structures to achieve the best outcome for you.
