DENTAL BRIDGESWhat are Dental Bridges?
Missing teeth can make it difficult to chew or may make it embarrassing for you to smile. IF not replaced, they can also cause your remaining teeth to shift and become crooked. Dental bridges have been used for years to replace missing teeth. Dental bridges are a fixed treatment option and they utilize your existing teeth (the ones on either side of the gap you want replaced) as anchors. The dental bridge fills the gap of the missing teeth with life-like prosthetically looking teeth. Dental bridges are made from various materials including metals, gold, alloys, porcelain or a combination. Modern bridges ensure that white dental porcelain is utilized at least on the outer layer to mimic the color and reflective properties of natural teeth.
What is the process of getting a bridge?
The anchor teeth (teeth on either side of the gap) are first assessed for suitability, if they have pre-existing filling, these may or may not need to be replaced for durability underneath the bridge. Typically radiographs may be necessary to assess for pre-existing periodontal conditions or pathology. Once we have ensured the teeth are strong enough for the bridge in the first appointment, local anaesthetic is used and the anchor teeth are prepared by recontouring them to accommodate for the spacing required for the crowns. Impressions of these newly recontoured teeth are then sent to a trusted Australian owned laboratory, and the bridges made by skilled technicians typically take 2 weeks. The second visit involves the bridge being carefully inserted by our dentists. Whilst waiting for the second appointment a temporary bridge or crowns will be placed, so you can continue with social commitments and chew comfortably.
Dental bridges have good long term success and functionality.
