Losing a tooth suddenly — whether it’s because of a sporting incident, a bad fall, or something unexpected — can come as quite a shock.

At Blackburn Family Dental, we’ve seen nearly every type of dental emergency imaginable. The good news is, there are many reliable options available to replace a lost tooth — even in an emergency situation

Here’s what you need to know to fix a lost tooth or a faulty/missing implant.

When Is a Tooth Loss Considered an Emergency?

If you’ve lost a tooth — or a tooth implant, which functions just like a regular tooth — due to an injury or accident, this constitutes a dental emergency.

Here are some examples of issues that should be seen straight away:

  • A knocked-out or broken tooth
  • A dental implant that feels loose or is shifting
  • Swelling, bleeding or discomfort around an implant
  • A crown that’s popped off or cracked
  • A dental implant that appears to be falling out.

You don’t need to be in excruciating pain for a dental emergency to be serious. If any of the above happens to you, the sooner you see a dentist, the better the outcome will be.

What Should You Do First?

If it’s a natural tooth that has been knocked out and you can find it, gently rinse it in milk or a saline solution. Try to avoid touching the root. If it slides back into place, you can gently hold it there by biting on a piece of gauze. If not, keep it moist (a cup of milk or the inside of your cheek is fine) and get in touch with us straight away.

If you’ve noticed something’s not right with a dental implant (maybe it’s wobbly or the gum around it feels swollen), avoid chewing on that side and try to limit hot food and drinks until you visit the dentist.

The main thing is to try and visit a dentist as soon as possible. The sooner you’re seen, the better the outcome when it comes to saving the tooth or starting a proper repair.

What Are Your Tooth Replacement Options?

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to replacing a missing tooth. The best option depends on your oral health, the condition of your jawbone and gums, how quickly you’d like to restore your smile, and what feels right for your lifestyle and budget.

Here’s a quick guide to the main options we discuss with patients at Blackburn Family Dental:

Dental Implants

Dental Implants are one of the most popular and trusted solutions to addressing a missing tooth, especially if the real tooth cannot be found or is badly damaged. A small titanium post is placed into the jawbone to act as a replacement root, with a custom crown fitted on top once healing is complete.

Pros:

  • Feels and functions like a natural tooth
  • Helps maintain bone levels
  • Extremely durable with long-term success.

Cons:

  • Requires minor surgery
  • Healing time needed (usually 3–6 months) before final crown is placed
  • Higher upfront cost than some alternatives.
Dental Bridges

A dental bridge fills the gap left by a missing tooth, using the adjacent teeth as anchors. It’s a great option if those adjacent teeth already need crowns or restorations.

Pros:

  • No surgery required
  • Restores appearance and function quickly
  • Fixed in place (doesn’t come in and out).

Cons:

  • Involves reshaping healthy neighbouring teeth
  • Doesn’t support the jawbone as an implant does
  • May need replacement after 10–15 years.
Removable Dentures

Dentures are a common choice when multiple teeth are missing or if dental implants aren’t an option at this time. They can be full or partial and are taken out for cleaning.

Pros:

  • Lower upfront cost
  • Fast to produce
  • No surgery involved.

Cons:

  • Can move or feel less stable
  • May affect speech or eating initially
  • Doesn’t prevent bone shrinkage over time.
  • Requires relining procedure when bone remodels underneath

What To Expect When Visiting the Dentist for an Emergency

If you’ve just lost or chipped a tooth, or felt something off about an implant, here’s what typically happens when you visit your dentist to get your emergency addressed:

  1. Immediate Assessment

We’ll begin by examining the affected area, taking X-rays if needed, and assessing the severity of the damage. The goal is to understand what has happened and what needs to be done immediately.

  1. Pain Relief and Stabilisation

If you’re in pain, our first priority is to get you comfortable. This might include medication, cleaning the area, or securing any loose teeth or implants.

  1. Discussing Your Options

Once we’ve stabilised the situation, we’ll talk through the next steps. That might be placing a same-day implant, securing a temporary crown, or starting treatment to prepare for a future implant or bridge.

  1. Temporary vs Permanent Solutions

Not every emergency can be resolved in a single visit. In some cases, we may provide a temporary solution (such as a partial denture or splint) until the area has healed sufficiently for a long-term solution.

  1. Ongoing Support

After your emergency dental visit, we’ll schedule follow-up appointments as needed to complete treatment, monitor your healing, and ensure everything is on track.
