What Are Dental Implants?

For more than 3 decades, dental implant procedures have proven to be a safe and effective method for replacing teeth. Made from materials that work well with the human body, dental implants serve as a strong and safe foundation for teeth replacement.

Procedures for dental implants in Blackburn typically consist of two phases. In the first phase, an implant fixture would be created to mimic that of your original tooth root. Comprising of titanium cylinder, the fixtures would be surgically placed into your upper or lower jawbone. After placement, the fixture will fuse with the jawbone until it is fully integrated and becomes part of your body. The second phase includes the fitting of the prosthesis and ensuring that it blends seamlessly with the appearance and colour of your natural teeth.

Why You Should Get Dental Implants

Dental implants are a popular treatment to replace a missing tooth due to its likeness to a natural tooth. Cosmetic dental implants can be used individually to replace a lost tooth or grouped together to help rebuild a whole smile.

With the help of modern implants, patients that have lost teeth due to gum disease, tooth decay, or trauma can benefit from this treatment. Opting for dental implants in Blackburn has been known to help improve the ease of eating and speaking, as well as enhance the health of the existing teeth through better load distribution around the mouth. With cosmetic dental implants, patients can now regain full function and smile confidently.

Dental Implant Treatment In Blackburn

Your dental implant treatment will begin primarily with a full assessment that will measure the fit of your teeth, your oral health, and the density of your jawbone. If insufficient bone volume is discovered, grafting procedures are available in order to allow the successful placement of implants.

A dental implant, consisting of a fixture which is a small rod/cone, usually made of titanium, is inserted into the bone of your jaw under local anaesthetic. This process will take approximately 15 minutes to an hour. Following the healing period that spans over a couple of months, a process known as osseo-integration will take place where there is biological union of bone and the fixture. In most cases, the implant would be settled in and fully healed within 3 to 6 months. Dental implant dentists would then be able to carry forward with the process of fitting the replacement teeth to the firmly positioned implants.

The recovery time for dental implants depends on your medical and dental history and various other factors. Most patients mention that there is less discomfort than with the original extraction. On average, it takes just a couple of days for the discomfort to subside. The complete healing of your gum takes 2-3 weeks and the jawbone approximately 3-6 months.

Here at Blackburn Family Dental Care, we also offer guided surgery. What is guided surgery? It is the latest technology in which we utilise your bone scan and an impression of your mouth to create a surgical guide. A surgical guide is a mouthguard which attaches securely to your existing teeth or gums during placement of the fixture (titanium rod/cone). It has drill access holes which are 3D milled to the exact position where the implant is planned to be optimally placed based on your bone scans. This ensures the placement of your implant is as safe for you as possible. Please enquire with your dentist if this is an option.
